Seasearch Ireland

Seasearch Ireland  is a citizen science biodiversity recording scheme for divers and snorkelers. The scheme uses volunteer recreational divers to record sub-tidal species at dive sites around Ireland and Britain. The scheme  is suitable for snorkelers and divers who have an interest in what they’re seeing under water, want to learn more and want to help protect the marine environment.

The main aim of Seasearch is to map the types of sea bed found in the near-shore zone around the whole of the Britain and Ireland. In addition Seaserch records the species found in each area, helping to identify the richest sites for marine life, sites where there are problems and sites which need protection.

Seasearch Ireland collects and validates species and habitat records from its network of volunteer divers and regularly submits validated records to the National Biodiversity Data Centre. To date Seasearch has submitted 53,231 validated records which are mapped via our Biodiversity Mapping System.
