Species Description

Length: to 34 mm
Tegmentum colour: variable, typically from creamy white to olive green and brown, with white and yellow blotches; the jugal area may be lighter (cream or beige) or with dark bluish longitudinal streaks. Sculpture: valves usually beaked. The jugal area with close, longitudinal riblets; latero-pleural areas covered with typically widely spaced granules of variable shape, from oval to more or less elongate drop-shaped. Girdle: broad and usually covered with two kinds of spicules: evenly distributed short spicules, and longer thick spicules, curved, interspersed amongst them, with 18 large tufts of spines arranged around the head and at the sutures. Geographic range: Found in the north Atlantic from Scotland, England, north coasts of France and Spain, west coast of Portugal, and most likely in the Mediterranean Sea.
