Girdle with distinct, long spines, sparsely distributed (particularly in intersegmental areas). Lateral areas of intermediate valves with distinct pustules.

Valve colour and pattern variable, generally mottled green-brown colours, but can be pink, yellow, white-and-black, or even blue. Girdle often with banded colour pattern.
